Rod grew up following in the footsteps of his Trainer Father, Dee Olsen. He started his first colt at the early age of 8 and from there his passion for making good horses grew. In the early 70’s, Dee Olsen invited Ray Hunt up to Canada and Rod learned early on that there was a better way. Following in the manner of Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance, Rod learned that when working with horses, respect, patience, and a gentle hand go a long way in developing a trusting, confident and willing partner. As a husband and the father of 6 children, these qualities have carried over into his Family Life. Rod has developed a training program that is based on helping horses and riders reach their greatest potential. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and expertise through clinics and one on one training sessions. He’s an accomplished Farrier and Horseman, training horses for a variety of disciplines. Theres one thing that all Rods horses have in common, and thats a “Great Start.” His love of his trade is evident in that he never tires of the challenges. His Motto is, “Leave em better than you found em!” He lives by this principle wether it be towards the human kind or the four legged. In relation to the horse, sometimes this comes in small successes with time, but Rod believes in “Doing the right things First,” and laying a solid foundation to build on.
Rod is the 2011 and 2013 Winner of the Canadian Colt Breaking Challenge as well as the 2014 Winner of the Rocking Heart Ranch Colt Starting Competition. The following year he had the privilege of Judging this Competition.
Renee Gareau: Raised on a beef ranch in St. Laurent, MB, Renee was taught that hard work brought reward. Her passion for horses started at a very young age. At 10, she purchased her first horse, a 2 year old green broke quarter horse. It was as a green rider, Renee experienced the value of determination and learning from difficulty. Renee joined 4-H in 2000 and gained a skillful book knowledge and valuable riding experience. It was then, that Renee started to take clinics and began to ranch rodeo, winning several buckles and awards.
After high school, Renee pursued her diploma in Equine Science Western Horsemanship at Olds College. She qualified for this program while starting colts at K Bars S Quarter Horses in Kola, MB. In 2009, Renee began her 2 year diploma at Olds College under the tutelage of great instructors Wil Speight, Ross Hanson, Cathy Chalack and more. The classes at Olds College were focused in the arena, a great value to Renee. At Olds, Renee’s knowledge and passion for the industry grew, while her classmates completed work practicums with well-known trainers, Renee challenged herself by exercising horses and starting colts in the small town of Bawlf, AB for Glen and Bonnie Romanuik. It was here, Renee garnered a reputation and quickly found herself with more horses than she was ready for.
After her work practicum, she left Bawlf and became an assistant trainer at Will Hanson Performance Horses in Redwater, AB. Here, Renee spent several months learning to finish horses and start young horses on cattle.
In the spring of 2012, Renee was offered the opportunity to become the main trainer at a new facility in Camrose, AB. The owner was a former client from her days starting colts in Bawlf.
Renee has competed in Team Penning, including winning the Alberta Team Penning Classics Open and Limited 11 Classes in 2013, the Rocking Heart Ranch Colt Starting Competition, tying for 1st place.
